• This is a BIG IDEA, SO OK to invite you to think just a teensy bit?

Ultimate? How can evolving be ultimate Don’t you transform by going to some bigger, better, “more” form? Or to whatever’s the “next” step, level, stage? How can any point in a process be ultimate?

Great questions. Any step, level or stage implies the potential of a still more evolved one. So there can NOT be an ultimate “form” of anything.

But what if growing, developing and evolving consist of more than steps, levels, stages? Beyond form or things? Could some other possibility be ultimate?

    Yes! How?

Every path for conscious developing, evolving, growing passes BETWEEN steps, levels, or stages.

And in between you have to let at least some “old” fall away so some “new” can come.

In between you OPEN. All growing, developing, evolving only appear to go forward. Ultimately all involve this in and out dance, opening to our ultimate ground beyond any form or thing.

Whether you grow beyond old bodily patterns, mind sets, identities, defenses, scripts, habits, addictions, aspects of ego, small self, or whatever else, you pass from old to new THIS way: by and through opening.

I first presented this view of opening in a chapter for the Dharma Press in 1980: “Human Development and Ultimate Reality.”  It was an invited chapter to comment on a new discipline created by Tibetan Buddhist master, Tarthang Tulku, Rinpoche, for applying Buddhist corrosive analysis to Western categories: “Time, Space, Knowledge.”

At that time, observing very carefully, I asked, “And what does opening open to?” And staying carefully attuned to what appears in the timeless blip when “opening opens” all I could find was “openness.”  And I had to conclude–please hang in for this head-cracking few words:

“Opening opens to the openness it opens to.”

This kind of phrase has long been known to philosophers and literary critics as recursive or reflexive.  I was content to have stumbled my way to something like a Zen koan.

Over the decades since, I’ve explored and validated this idea further.  By opening myself and guiding others bodily, mentally, emotionally and spiritually that this formulation is still valid.  Yes, “opening opens to openness” only now I can add . . .

    all opening opens to ENERGY.

Why is that?  Stay with me for a couple of tricky steps.  First, I apparently wasn’t just throwing words at this business of “opening.”  Over decades of meditating on its nature I am more clear that “opening,” however ec-static, out of time, a blip in a non-enduring instant, has this “turning back on itself” quality.

“Opening,” as happens when we “open,” is not simply a change in the arrangement of things, as when we open a door, window, or have an incision opened by a surgeon.  “Opening” emerges by giving rise to itself, out of itself.

In nature such phenomena occur from the universe itself to galaxies to such temporary structures that form and sustain themselves from the same substance as their surroundings: tornadoes or smoke rings in air, and whirlpools in water.

And all energy fields!  Energy emerges by forming and sustaining fields out of itself.  And passes through those fields in ways that turn back on themselves, as in the figure 8:

    cosmometry.net

In short, and here’s the second step, “opening” opens to energy because “opening” IS energy, forming and sustaining itself, out of itself, as new energizing.

At the atomic level, new energy raises electrons to the next higher ring of an atomic shell. Whenever you open on any path of good work a similar boost happens from the new energy you draw on. And . . .

the more you open, the more energy you draw, and the higher you leap from any given hit.

So, Energy’s Way has emerged as a path for continuously improvising by opening.  And this practice allows us to cultivate energy directly, dramatically, way beyond what traditional, prescripted practices of yoga, meditation, and chi have made possible.

And this dramatic departure is understandable as a synchronous discovery of “toroidal dynamics.”  Already found pervasively in nature, toroidal emerging apparently also occurs across all major  planes of human expression.  And most strikingly, energizingly so, as when we “open,” whether bodily, mentally, emotionally or spiritually.

The Basic practice is simple, easy and brief.  You can explore for yourself with instructions available by complimentary videos. If you haven’t already signed in for your videos, go HERE.
